Some people turn to “the old time religion” when modern times shatter their myths while others retain the core and reinvent it. Look at the radical changes in the world just in the last century for proof of this, and the bitter struggle between modernism and traditionalism. Myths need to reinvent themselves to be relevant to the times, but haven’t in this time of rapid ( some even say accelerating) change. How to live a human lifestyle under any circumstances (pedagogical function).Ĭampbell and mythology will be the source of many blog posts (so brace yourselves!), but the most prescient point he made was this: we can’t have a mythology for a long long time because the world is changing too fast.Validating and maintaining a certain society (sociological function).Seeing that mystery as manifest of all things (cosmological function).Opening the world to the dimension of mystery. ![]() I have read many of his books, but in this particular episode (“The Message of Myth”) he succinctly summarized the functions of mythology. I was watching Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth on my iPod the other day. That explains my interest in cosmology, anthropology, physics, evolution… On the other hand, others except the unknown without the least bit of skepticism or curiosity. Some despise uncertainty and seek explanations no matter how spurious or tenuous. To go all postmodern on you, I think that how we relate to what we don’t know says a lot about who we are. Whether this stems from my curiosity or is a product of it, who knows–certainly not me. I have a profound appreciation, one could say awe, of the mysteries of life. ![]()
